Destressing, Self-Care and Mindfulness: A Teen Guide to a Happy, Healthy Life

Modern teens hear all kinds of messages about how they should be…and what they should do:

Be a good student.

Fit in.

Look cool.

Don’t hang out with those kids.

giphyEat better.

Get off your screens.

Do your chores.

Exercise more.

Why? Because…it’ll look good on a college application.

And on and on…

Modern teens sometimes feel like it’s impossible for them to do everything they’re supposed to do.

And the effects are scary:

I remember the stress of trying to fit in when I went to San Ramon Valley High School. I wanted to feel special and I needed a place to connect with other teens who were struggling like I was…to slow down and learn some skills to survive the rough waters of teenage life.

4-Week Summer Class for Teens

Beginning on June 19th, I’ll be leading a 4-week class for teens on Destressing, Self-Care and Mindfulness.

In this class your teen will learn to:

– Identify stress mindfully and address its root causes.

– Create a ‘toolbox’ of self-care skills to defuse harmful behaviors.

– Learn how to express emotions in healthy ways.

– Have fun growing into a more mature young person.

The Stats: Why Your Teen Needs This Class

A study found that social and emotional learning (SEL) programs, which included mindfulness techniques, resulted in

an 11% improvement in achievement tests,

a 25% improvement  in social and emotional skills,

and a 10% decrease in classroom  misbehaviour, anxiety and depression, compared with pupils who received no program.

Study by Joseph A. Durlak from Loyola University Chicago [Durlak  et al (2011)]

Something magical happens when we practice destressing and being mindful of what is happening in the present moment. We start to recognize what’s healthy for us and what brings us more joy.

I believe teens are all gifted people in some way. And if they take the space they need to destress and be healthy, their gifts will grow and shine more and more.
